Language of Miami Wildflowers Workshop

Language of Miami Wildflowers Workshop |
Led by horticulturist Liana Vasseur and poet Yaddyra Peralta

This workshop explores how we can create our own local ‘language of flowers’ using wildflowers that are often cast off as ‘weeds’.

Participants first learn to identify spaces in Miami most likely to host common wildflowers. Exploring the field site, we collect, identify, prepare, and arrange wildflowers into bouquets. Participants discuss and record their impressions in a wildflower field guide. The field guide lists key traits to help identify Miami wildflowers (name, color, shape, size, height, growth habit) Together, horticulturist Liana Vasseur and poet Yaddyra Peralta
help participants write poetry. Participants take home their micro-bouquet.

About your facilitators

Liana Vasseur (she/her) learned to love flowers growing up in Dade County. She became a florist by accident during graduate school in Kentucky. For 20 years she juggled floristry, horticulture, and teaching. She now works as a translator and editor, but her main goal is to help people connect with the natural world and their own feelings of belonging.

Yaddyra Peralta (she/her) is a Honduran-American poet, essayist, and editor whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in Ploughshares, Sink Review, Jai Alai, The Florida Review, Miami Rail, Eight Miami Poets (Jai Alai Books, 2015), The Breakbeat Poets, Vol. 4: LatiNext (Haymarket Books) and Home in Florida: Latinx Writers and the Literature of Uproodteness (University of Florida Press). She lives in Miami Florida.
