Led by New World School of the Arts senior Mikaelo Perez with support from poetry & drawing teacher Jennifer Gifford, Verbal Visuals is a by students, for students Open Call for poems that use vivid imagery to create a Verbal Visual. Poems will be shared on public transportation throughout April to uplift your daily commute.

Mikaelo Perez is a Cuban-American, second generation immigrant that has witnessed the wearying effects of working to exhaustion for every meal. Working as both a visual artist and a writer has revealed to him the healing powers creative mediums may have on an individual. By spreading poems in public spaces, he hopes to alleviate the minds of those tired from their toils even if only for a second.

Jenny Gifford grew up in New Haven, CT, and has been teaching for 30 years, 8 at NWSA. She’s run 6 Miami half-marathons, and sails Hobiecats with her partner Hans Evers who is a teacher at rival magnet arts high school, Design and Architecture Senior High School, (DASH).
